How To Import .CSV Files Into Xero

This tutorial will guide you through the process of importing your CSV file into Xero.

How To Export Transactions Into .CSV

  1. Log into Blox.io.
  2. Export transactions by selecting the Transaction tab.
  3. Click on Export CSV.
  4. Please note, you can download your complete and entire tx history or use our filter options for a specific date range.
  5. You will then be prompted with a window to select your download location.
  6. Choose your location and click save.
  7. Open your .CSV file to view your transactions or begin formatting.

In order to ensure successful and clean integration of your .CSV file into Xero, you must manually format the file before importing. Blox has provided you with step-by-step instructions for specifically formatting exported Blox .CSV files.

Rules & Requirements for CSV Formatting

  • Delete unnecessary data:
    • Empty rows
    • Columns containing opening and closing balances (Xero calculates balance from the transactions)
    • Any bank account numbers shown in the import file
  • Mandatory fields: Are marked with an asterix (*) in the import file.
    • Date – Use the format DD/MM/YYYY or MM/DD/YYYY
    • Amount –
      • Both income and expense amounts must be in the same column
      • Show income as positive amounts and expenses as negative amounts, with a negative sign in front of the amount. For example: -30.00 (Do not include currency symbols or use commas to show decimal places)

Matching Fields From Xero To .CSV File

When importing a CSV file, you need to assign and match each column in the import file (CSV) to a bank statement field within the Xero platform.
The template for CSV Export with Xero can be found here. Available fields can be seen in the template:

Suggestions for field matching:

  • Date (numeric)
  • Amount (minus or plus – missing)
  • Payee (>to)
  • Notes (>Description)
  • Operation (>transaction type)
  • Account code (missing)
  • Reference (TX hash)

Match all the fields you want to import data into.

Note: When assigning more fields, you can import more information into Xero for each statement line.

If your file contains a date format, Xero will prompt you to confirm the correct format you desire. Xero will then apply the chosen format to the entire CSV file and all future CSV files.

Formatting Your .CSV Files For Import

After completing the export and formatting of your .CSV from Blox (Section 1.1), open the .CSV file in Excel. It should look similar to the image below.

Please note, the ‘date’ is the only field/cell that requires formatting. All other fields/cells do not need to be assigned to continue.

4. Save the final file with a title and in .CSV format. If you are using Google Sheets, click File > Download as > select .CSV, current sheet and save the file to your computer.
5. Import formatted .CSV into Xero by following the steps above in section 2.1.
